Possibly the best video game in existence, not a day goes by i where i dont think about it, you are a simple minded neanderthal if you dont play this absolute masterpiece. 10/10. 44.2 hrs on recordPOSTED: 21 JULYThis one's a tricky one. I've never had my opinion of a game change so much just in one playthrough before. I'm still not fully sure as to what rating to give this game, though I'll suppose I'll figure it out while writing this review. For the record, writing this was difficult.Assassin's Creed Origins is a game I've wanted to play since release. I've adored Ancient Egypt for a long time now, and seeing a massive open world game set in Ancient Egypt definitely caught my attention. However, the fact that it was an Assassin's Creed game put me off a little bit, seeing as how the recent games have turned out. I'm a fan of Brotherhood and Revelations. I played the third game and didn't really enjoy it. I played Black flag as more of a fan obligation rather than wanting, and I didn't even bother with any of the others after that. Eventually, I decided to buy it anyway and give it a go......and oh boy, It's been a ride. It's hard to know where to begin with this game. There so many things to talk about, some good, some bad. I'll start off with what I liked about it. The game world is spectacular. It's one of the best, if not, the best game world I've ever seen. The landscapes are stunning. From the mountanious valleys to the vast deserts and beautiful plains, all containing dozens of locations for the player to explore. The world is teeming with wildlife and people. Each zone of the map contains different types of people with varying politcal opinions. I spent a big chunk of my playtime exploring the world. There's hardly anything that I noticed that's lazy about the world design. Every location has a massive amount of attention to detail. The hard work really paid off. I rarely felt the need to fast travel. I was quite fine riding to my objective, regardless of it being on the other side of the map. Even the characters e well designed, and look accurate to the setting. The optimisation isn't that bad either. I usually had 60+ FPS for the majority of the playthrough, with around 40 FPS in busy locations. The slight RPG approach is a welcome addition and has been designed rather well. Every time you level up you earn a skill point which you can use to improve your combat capabilities. The variety of weapons and equipment is also good and well balanced out. Climbing is a lot smoother than the previous games, and is less annoying, beside the occasional inconsistencies. The combat, while not perfect, is also a lot smoother and more freestyle, making fights more varied and interesting. However, the problems with this game are big, and hard for me to ignore. There are quite a few areas where AC: Origins fails to impress me.I'm going to be upfront about this, the story is terrible. Right from the beginning, It's a bore. It's a premise that has been used all too much, with nothing new added to it, other than the fact that a group of people are the bad guys instead of just one. You play as Bayek who was once a Medjay, a sworn protector of Egypt before the reign of the pharoah, Ptolemy. Whilst on a hunting trip, Bayek's son was killed. The people responsible are known as The Order. The main story follows Bayek and his wife, Aya, as they exact their revenge on The Order by killing it's members who are responsible. As well as this, outside of the Animus, (The machine that lets people view the memories of their ancestors), you follow the story of a character named Layla who.... really didn't add much to the game... at all. You only really see her four times and there's no character development at all. It was hard to feel anything for the characters in this game. The writing is poor, and doesn't pick up until much later on. Bayek and Aya are alright, but their relationship is hardly dynamic. The story progresses as you kill more and more leaders of The Order. However, most of the missions for killing each member are so dull and forgetable. The earliest one I can remember is The Hyena, and that was the first mission that I actually felt something for a character. Most of the quests are like this. Dull, unengaging and repetitive. In terms of the main story, it took me about 28 hours of playtime for it to pick up. However, the final missions are actually not that bad, and the final cutscene was brilliant. Seeing how the main characters created the Creed which would be seen in later games made me feel nostalgic. Then there is the side quests. The worst part of the game in my opinion. The side quests are pretty much of MMO standard. Usually either fetch quests or kill the target quests. About 90% of them are the same, and they only serve to give XP. Here's the standard layout of a side quest: Talk to npc, get quest - they tell you to fetch/kill someone - find that someone - fetch/kill them - return to npc - finish. That's 90% of the side quests. And there are a lot of them. This wouldn't be too much of an issue to me if they actually gave a good amount of XP, which they don't. Side quests such as The Bride and The Wrestler are examples of side quests that are actually different. If there were more side quests that took different approaches instead of the same basic structure, I would be okay. The game has a grinding problem. I have no idea why there aren't more people talking about this. There were times where I almost gave up on the game because of it. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of ways to level up, that's good. But almost all of these ways hardly give you any xp at all, most only give less than 1,000 xp, which is nothing later on in the game. Most locations have a list of objectives. Once you complete those objectives, you complete the location and obtain XP. However, these XP gains are so minimal, and the way you complete the locations quickly becomes boring. Discovering new locations can give you XP, but again, gives you hardly any XP. You can solve Papyrus puzzles, which are essentially text treasure maps, again, hardly any XP. You can compete in arena tournaments... hardly any XP. You can avenge other players by finding the enemies responsible and killing them, which is just.... weird.... also hardly any XP.It's like this game is trying to be an MMO. At times it feels like an MMO. There are so many parts that feel rushed and lack enough thought. While the combat has seen improvements, the repetitive nature of the activities to do can make combat sequences seem annoying and offputting. You have a bird called Senu which essentially acts as a drone. It can spot enemies and help you locate NPCs and objects of importance. This completely ruins most of the enjoyment for me and makes things way too easy. The amount of times I've had to raid a base or an encampment or intercept an npc is ridiculous. I want to progress through the game, but it just feels like the game is fighting back and telling me not to. The awful grind, combined with the dull storytelling and forgetable side quests and lackluster characters really let this game down. I don't hate this game. There is definitely fun to be had with it. It has a beautiful game world, teeming with exploration to be had. It's just the things that come with it are average at best. It's like they spent 3/4 of the production time on how the game looks rather than how it plays. AC: Origins is one of those examples of why Steam should really implemet a mixed/neutral option, instead of just yes or no. They're too busy ruining developer pages and making Discord knockoffs to do it though. However, I'm going to give this game a yes, mainly because, despite my annoyances, I did enjoy a majority of my time playing this game. Would I play it again? Doubtful, but anything is possible.Final Verdict - 5.3/10-------------------------------------------------------------------------If you liked this review, be sure to give it a like! I'm still learning. :)Also be sure to follow my curator page here- http://steamcommunity.com/groups/narukoopasreviews#cura. this game sent me into a deep dark depression, but in a good way.
